The Protein Squeeze

Methodology: In July 2026, we surveyed 3,042 adults across the United States to examine how rising grocery costs are affecting household protein purchases and eating habits. Demographic quotas and weighting were applied where appropriate to ensure the sample was broadly representative of U.S. adults by age, gender, and region. Respondents were asked whether they had reduced their consumption of meat or fish, switched to cheaper cuts or private-label products, reduced portion sizes, or replaced animal protein with lower-cost alternatives such as eggs, beans or lentils. The survey also explored whether adults were prioritizing protein for their children while cutting back themselves, along with concerns around nutrition, food quality, meal repetition, and affordability. Responses were analyzed nationally and by state.
